Assistantships

Departments within the Division of Student Life at the University of Florida, as well as related departments and colleges, provide employment opportunities for graduate students interested in pursuing a career in a student affairs related field. The Dean of Students Office is committed to providing opportunities for graduate students to connect classroom learning with real-world experience. The personal and professional skills gained will be beneficial throughout a professional career.

Graduate student employment is typically 20 hour per week positions for the academic year. Some assistantships/positions are also available in the summer. Candidates must be accepted to a graduate program at the University of Florida in order to obtain graduate employment.

New Student & Family Programs - Orientation Programs

Preview Program Description
New Student and Family Programs successfully orientates over 7,000 new freshmen, 2,000 transfer students, and over 10,000 family members each summer. As a national model, Preview in conjunction with other orientation and transition programs has successfully contributed to a first-year retention rate over 97%. This program features 23 two-day programs over the span of three months and features over 150 different campus partners. Each year Preview selects approximately 45 student leaders to assist in the coordination of the Preview program.

Position Description
The New Student and Family Programs Graduate Assistant works directly with the Assistant Director for the New Student and Family Programs area within the Dean of Students Office and provides programs and services for new freshmen and transfer students and their families (including first-year student orientation, transfer orientation, welcome activities, orientation leader training course, and additional programs as needed). This position primarily assists in the coordination of orientation student leader selection, training, and supervision component.

Orientation Leader training components include but are not limited to the development, design, coordination, and co-instruction of the spring semester Orientation Leader 3 credit training course (EDA4930) as well as the development of staff retreat, and intensive training week. This position will also include assessment of the training efforts and leadership development of the Orientation Leaders. In addition, this position will help with the logistical coordination of the transfer orientation and new student orientation program. This is an excellent opportunity to learn skills in the areas of leadership development and training, teaching, supervision, program planning, budget management, assessment, strategic planning, and collaboration. Salary includes in-state tuition waiver for 9 credit hours, stipend for an academic year (fall and spring semester) & GatorGradCare (health insurance).

In particular this position:
• Assists in the coordination of the recruitment, interview, and selection process of New Student and Family Programs, Undergraduate Orientation Leaders, Preview Staffers
• Assists in training and supervision of Orientation Leaders during the academic year.
• Assists in the design and coordination EDA 4930 the Preview Staff Training Course.
• Develop and coordinate Preview Staff marketing materials.
• Assist in the preparation and participation in our Regional Conference SROW.
• Assist in the facilitation and coordination of Spring Leadership Retreat including curriculum development, staff selection, and assessment.
• Collaborates with other departments and individuals to assist in the goals of this position including the Office of Student Activities, J. Wayne Reitz Union, Division of Enrollment Management, and Academic Affairs.
• Maintain accurate records and files related to this area, Promote safety and risk management practices within student organizations
• Serve on University, Student Life, and departmental committees and task forces
• Practice fiscal responsibility within programs and events.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Evening and weekend work required.

New Student & Family Programs - Transition Programs

Position Description
The New Student and Family Programs Graduate Assistant works directly with the Assistant Director for Transition Programs in the New Student and Family Programs area within the Dean of Students Office. The Graduate Assistant for Transition Programs will work with the University of Florida’s premier first-year seminar course, First Year Florida. This includes supporting programs and services for first-year and transfer students. This position primarily assists in the coordination of First Year Florida Peer Leader recruitment, selection, training, advising, and supervision component.

Additional components include but are not limited to the development, coordination, and instruction of the Peer Leader one-credit training course (IDS4905) as well as assistance with Instructor training and support, Peer Leader retreat and supervision of the Peer Mentor program. The Graduate Assistant for Transition Programs will serve as a Graduate Leader in their first-year and instructor on record for First Year Florida during their second year. The Graduate Assistant for Transition programs will also have the opportunity to assess programmatic components, assist in the editing and management of the First Year Florida textbook, Campus Resource Guide and monitor the Campus Partner Presentation Database. Salary includes in-state tuition waiver for 9 credit hours, stipend for an academic year (fall and spring semester) & GatorGradCare (health insurance).

In particular this position:
• Assists in the coordination of recruitment and selection process for First Year Florida Peer Leaders.
• Assists in the training, supervision, and advisement of 70-90 First Year Florida Peer Leaders and 60-70 Peer Mentors.
• Assists in the development, coordination, and facilitation of Peer Leader and Peer Mentor retreats.
• Coordinates and oversees Peer Leader Banquet.
• Serves as the instructor on record for SLS 1102: First Year Florida during their second year.
• Assists in the programming and development of First Year Florida’s Transition Conference.
• Assists with the analysis, synthesis, and reporting of assessment data for First Year Florida components.
• Assists in resource development for University staff and faculty that serve as First Year Florida Instructors.
• Assist in the editing and management of the First Year Florida textbook and Campus Resource Guide.
• Monitor the Campus Partner Presentation Database.
• Collaborates with University staff/faculty and other departments to assist in the goals of this position.
• Maintains accurate records and files related to this area. Promoting safety and risk management practices within student organizations.
• Serves on University, Student Affairs, and departmental committees and task forces.
• Is fiscally responsible with programs and events.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Evening and weekend work required.

Skill Development:
This is an excellent opportunity for skill development in the areas of:
• Advising student leaders.
• Supervising a student leadership board and student assistants known as Lead Educators.
• Facilitating and designing training for undergraduate students, faculty/staff, and graduate students.
• Development of course curriculum: First Year Florida and IDS4905.
• Coordination and assistance with large campus events including celebration banquets, half-day conference and New Student Convocation.
• Assessment of programmatic components which includes but isn’t limited to analyzing data, developing assessment tools and distributing assessments.
• Coordinating and collaborating with departments across campus.
• Coordinating marketing efforts and student leader recruitment campaigns.
• Editing publication materials.

Campus Assistance & Resources for Empowerment - Pantry

Position Description
Americorps VISTA selected for this position works directly with the Hitchcock Field & Fork Pantry to enhance operations, raise awareness of services, conduct targeted outreach to specific populations.

Responsibilities will include the ability to:
• Provide on-site supervision and oversight of Pantry operations.
• Facilitate training and development for Pantry student assistants.
• Increase food-raising and clothing-raising opportunities.
• Design new and creative fundraisers for the Pantry.
• Develop a consistent source of supplies and funding for perishable food items at Pantry
• Coordinate Pantry marketing efforts to raise awareness of these programs.
• Research and assess marketing needs of the Pantry.
• Work with creative team to develop marketing content.
• Create informational blurbs about the Pantry and send to professionals/organizations/departments.
• Implement materials in a sustainable manner.

Campus Assistance & Resources for Empowerment - CVSC

Position Description
Americorps VISTA selected for this position works directly with the Collegiate Veterans Success Center (CVSC) to assess needs of veterans and dependents on campus, Improve marketing and outreach, Enhance veteran camaraderie and support, and research and assess housing insecurity on campus to make recommendations for potential programming opportunities.

Responsibilities will include the ability to:
• Design and implement surveys.
• Analyze demographics of all veterans and dependents on campus.
• Coordinate and facilitate training for new student assistants hired to work in the Collegiate Veterans Success Center.
• Improve marketing and social media of CVSC and U Matter, We Care.
• Initiate relationships with campus partners, in order to collaborate and receive assistance in marketing initiatives.
• Plan day of service.
• Organize a group of veterans to attend the annual undergraduate veterans’ conference each year.
• Conduct needs assessment of UF students, regarding housing insecurity.
• Research other college campuses regarding incidences of housing insecurity and resources available to these students
