For generations of Gators, the number one most requested student service on campus was additional, state of the art study space. After hearing students voice this concern over a number of years, Student Government explored different ways to solve this pervasive issue. After being left abandoned in the heart of campus, Newell Hall was decided on as the destination of a student space unlike any other we have at the University of Florida. Student Government and External Affairs worked tirelessly for a number of years to keep Newell Hall funding at the forefront of our legislative agenda. After student rallies, letter writing campaigns and dozens of meetings with the Governor and his staff, as well as members of the state house and senate, students were successful in securing $10 million. After an additional $5 million was secured by President Machen, the Newell Hall renovation began.

Today, the 24/7 Newell Hall Learning Commons provides a modern, vibrant environment that fosters and encourages student learning. Newell Hall was built for students and by students.
