Issue
Alcohol misuse represents a serious health issue for colleges and universities around the country. Surveys indicate the majority of college students drink regardless of their age and that approximately two out of every five college students engage in high risk drinking. High-risk drinking is associated with unintentional injury (e.g., motor vehicle crashes, falls, and drownings), sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancy, sexual assault, violence, and poor academic performance. In 2005 the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) estimated over 1,700 student deaths, 599,000 injuries, and 696,000 assaults annually associated with excessive drinking. Further, according to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, high-risk drinking epitomizes the greatest single problem that America's universities must address.
About the Alcohol Education Seminar
To educate students about the issue of high risk drinking, the University of Florida has purchased myStudentBody.com -Alcohol on an annual basis since fall 2002. myStudentBody.com -Alcohol is an interactive online alcohol instructional program designed to mass educate and screen students on alcohol issues. myStudentBody.com -Alcohol was developed and scientifically tested with grant support from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The site is a comprehensive, interactive, and personalized approach to meet the diverse needs of UF students.
This on-line alcohol education program allows students to:
- Have an online experience that is personalized and confidential by creating a password-protected risk-assessment profile.
- Receive online alcohol education in an engaging way by using interactive tools such as a Drinking Comparison Tool, a Calorie Calculator, a Drug Effects Tool, a Budget Calculator, a Medical Interactions Tool, a STD Calculator, an Anatomy Tool, and a Tool presenting Alcohol Laws by State. Students can access this resource anytime.
- Track their weekly alcohol consumption and compare their drinking to national averages based on age, gender, race, year in school, and Greek/athletic participation.
- Ask personal questions confidentially. Input from experts and peers, allows students to learn from health professionals and from other college students.
- Receive customized curricula for first year students, Greeks, athletes, and judicial.
- 24 hour, 7 day a week instant access to information.
