This page is intended for the family of prospective and current University of Florida students that have been diagnosed with or suspected of having a disability. Topics covered include: the law in relation to education, accommodations, confidentiality, and privacy, as well as, admissions information, transition from secondary to post-secondary education, New Student Programs, and university academic critical dates. The Law and Accommodations
This information will briefly explain the law as it applies to education in a post-secondary setting & the administration of accommodations to students with disabilities.

Buckley Amendment and FERPA
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1973 otherwise referred to as the Buckley Amendment explains how the information contained in student records can be accessed, thereby protecting the student's confidentiality and privacy.

Release of Information
In order to protect student's confidentiality and privacy we are prohibited from sharing certain information with others unless the student gives us written consent to do so. The student's request to release information could apply to other colleges, other service providers, testing services, parents, and more. The Release Form must be completed, signed and returned to the Disability Resource Center prior to the release of information.

This is information on the admissions process for students applying the University of Florida that have a disability. A checklist is provided.

Transitioning from Secondary to Post-secondary Education
Students with disabilities transitioning from secondary to post-secondary educational settings should know their rights and responsibilities. This site is sponsored by the Department of Education and the Office of Civil Rights.

Division of Student Affairs
The Division of Student Affairs supports the academic mission of the University of Florida by preparing students to assume roles of leadership, involvement and service as productive citizens in a culturally diverse, technologically sophisticated and increasingly complex society. The following University of Florida departments are part of the Division of Student Affairs: Career Resource Center, Counseling Center, Dean of Student Office, Housing and Residence Education, J. Wayne Reitz Union, Recreational Sports and Student Financial Affairs.

New Student Programs
New Student Programs is housed in the Dean of Students Office. They provide services to incoming and first year students such as: Preview (required orientation for incoming freshman and transfer students), First Year Florida student guide, and Family Weekend. Family Weekend is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your student and enjoy the University of Florida campus in a relaxed atmosphere.
